We all love to have a few drinks on a Friday or Saturday night, but going too hard will leave you with a killer hangover that can linger for what seems like forever which will leave you pretty much useless the following day.
There is no definitive answer on what causes a hangover.. but that being said, there are plenty of theories. A hangover has plenty of horrible side effects including; dizziness, nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, sleepiness, irritability… the list just keeps on going and the effects of excessive alcohol consumption varies for everyone.
The most obvious remedy is to limit your alcohol intake so that your body stays happy and healthy. But if you do find yourself extremely hungover, have a look at some of the most common ‘cures’, which ones are bs and which ones actually work.
Sleep is very important the day after your big night out, this is because alcohol affects sleep quality. So even just getting an extra hour or two after initially waking up can make such a difference to how you feel for the rest of the day.
Try and drink a lot of water right before you go to bed as well as the day after to keep you hydrated and feeling good. It is a good idea to drink water while drinking alcohol too… it is seriously the smartest thing you could do. It doesn’t stop you from getting drunk either, it just helps you to stay hydrated so you don’t feel like absolute crap in the morning.
You could also mix your spirits with water instead of a soft drink to achieve the same result.
Alcohol interferes with absorption, distribution and storage of a wide range of vitamins as well as affects the production of blood cells. So it is a good idea to down some detox water, orange juice and vitamins to help your body recover.
Before you start drinking you should eat a big meal as food helps slow the absorption process and the longer it takes for alcohol to enter the bloodstream, the longer it will take for you to become intoxicated.
I hear a lot of people recommending different types of greasy junk food for a hangover cure… but the truth is, this only works if you’re only a little hungover from the night before if you have a serious hangover you will instantly feel sick at the sight and smell of food like this. So, it’s best to play it safe and stick to butter on toast or something very plain to make sure you keep it down as best as possible. It doesn’t really matter what you eat the day after as long as you can stomach it.
A lot of people swear by their morning coffee the day after a bender to keep them awake and alert so they can still try to get the most out of the day.
Caffeine can definitely help to get you going and rid the body of some of the nasty side effects caused by drinking but it can also make them worse as well. Caffeine is known to dehydrate the body so drinking too much caffeine will just make your hangover worse.
A lot of people think that ‘sweating it out’ is a great way to cure a hangover… but considering that one standard drink is metabolized in about an hour there is absolutely no truth to this theory. Although, exercising is a great way to boost your mood so if you do decide to ‘sweat it out’ for the right reasons just make sure you stay hydrated.
You can take anti-nausea medication to soothe your upset stomach – and if you don’t have any on hand, just stir a little bit of bi-carb soda into a glass of water and add a bit of lemon or something yummy to help get it down.
It is a good idea to avoid medications such as painkillers. This is because common over-the-counter products like ibuprofen and aspirin have side effects that are more prominent with alcohol in the body. However, if you really need something for your headache stick to low doses over extended periods of time or use essential oils to help get rid of your headache.
Peppermint, lavender and rosemary oils are soothing and help to ease pain and reduce tension. You can use these oils in a diffuser or rub the oils into your temples and the base of your skull.
This is probably the most common theory out there and I always giggle when I hear people using the phrase ‘hair of the dog that bit you’ because it’s as stupid as it sounds and completely ineffective. It might give you temporary relief from a hangover – if at all, but all you’re really doing is delaying the suffering for another hour or so until your body is able to properly process the toxins from the alcohol.
