~ Meditation is mind without agitation ~

The word “Meditation” comes from the Latin root “Meditatum” which translates as; “to ponder”.

Meditation is said to be a way to take responsibility for our state of mind and to transform and adjust our mental state for the better. The true history of when and where it started is unknown. Nonetheless, there are countless variations practised around the world among all religions and a wide range of beliefs. These variations stray from what is believed to be ‘tradition’, but the foundations will never change.

How Does Meditation Impact the Brain?

The brain is a fascinating, yet extremely complex electrochemical organ, it uses electromagnetic energy to function. Meditation has really interesting effects on the human brain. The energy that emanates from the brain is displayed and measured in the form of brainwaves. There are four types of measurable brain waves and each of which can be achieved through meditation.

However, no one will be able to tell you what exactly is going to happen or how you will feel during meditation. This is because everyone is so different, there is no way to predict how your body and mind will react. You could fall into a Theta state within minutes or you could struggle to leave the Beta state. It could take you weeks to fight off your busy mind or it could happen instantly.

One of the many benefits of meditation includes the ability to slow down the aging process (on a cellular level). Research states that meditation can both, directly and indirectly, delay this process. Individuals who meditate regularly show an increase in the amount of melatonin produced in their bodies. Melatonin is a key hormone in slowing the impacts of aging as it delays the damaged caused to cells caused when the body starts to age naturally.

Chronic stress and anxiety play a big role in aging; the emotional distress causes the cells in our bodies to age at an accelerated rate. Meditation can both prevent and reverse this process. Regular practice will lessen these negative feelings and replace them with feelings that are positive. Once you are free of all the negative emotions causing you distress, the cells will react accordingly

Reduces Stress and Anxiety

Distress caused by negative emotions can be easily managed, lessened and cured by practising meditation regularly. Stress and anxiety have become so common that it’s highly unlikely that an individual will not experience these two mental states at least 3-4 times in their lifetime. Stress and anxiety can be caused by a number of factors, all of which are dependent on each particular individual and their current circumstances.

Meditation allows you to reach a state that is free from negative thought patterns and instead, make you relaxed and calm. This state of mind practised on a regular basis will change the way you process information and improve your perspective on the world.

Increases Awareness

Lack of awareness is extremely common and is how most people subconsciously choose to live their lives. Being completely unaware of the world, yourself and the people around you significantly impacts your ability to see the true beauty of it all. Regular meditation helps to increase self-awareness as well as awareness of what is observed around you. The world will reveal itself in a completely different light. You will become aware of how you think and process information, how you perceive others and how others perceive you.

Increases Happiness, Intelligence and Emotional Stability

Researchers have found that meditation increases an individual’s capacity for happiness by releasing ‘feel-good chemicals’ within the body. A sense of accomplishment will take effect when all of the benefits of meditation become apparent in your life. This in itself will increase those ‘feel-good chemicals’ we all love and keep motivation levels high. Regular meditation prevents emotional distress and promotes a calm and relaxed state of mind. This emotional stability is extremely important in life as our emotions are a powerful force that influences our thought processes, actions and what we choose to say.

It has now been scientifically proven that meditation enhances the size of the human brain in seven different regions directly related to intelligence… Yes – researchers have concluded that meditation does make you more intelligent!

Improves Concentration and Attention

According to recent studies, Meditation is able to improve everyday concentration and attention in just a couple of weeks. So, not only will this increase productivity and quality of work in the workplace but it will also benefit our kids. Meditation has the same effect on the developing minds of children but at a faster and more intense rate. Introducing your children to meditation as early as possible will give their brains a chance to develop vital, beneficial and habitual brain patterns which will help them across all aspects of life.

Improves Mindset and Encourages a Better Lifestyle

The benefits of meditation are noticeable after just a week of regular practice. The relaxing and calm state will cause your mindset to change. This mindset increases mental clarity and will help you to make better decisions. There are countless personal stories and case studies that prove meditation encourages a better lifestyle.

The benefits of meditation are endless and the benefits listed above are only 6 from a very long list. Meditating is an amazing way to find yourself in a world full of forced routines, mass confusion, hate and destruction. That being said, it is never too late to start experiencing the benefits of meditation and improving your life. If you’re finding it difficult to meditate daily, don’t stress… take a look at your routine and try to set realistic goals. Every minute counts!
