Common Causes of Stress

Stress occurs when the body and mind has to react and cope with change that requires you to adjust or respond in a way that is uncomfortable or unfamiliar. Everyone experiences stress, it is simply a part of life but it can be controlled by the way you choose to manage it and can even be useful in certain situations. Stress can be caused by a multitude of different things and how you manage it will differ depending on the cause.

The first thing you need to do is take a step back and evaluate what is causing you to feel stressed. Try to include every possibility you can think of as knowing what is causing the feeling will help you to manage it properly. I have put together a list of some of the common causes of stress but remember that stress can stem from absolutely anything.

1. Work Stress

Stress within the workplace is one of the most common forms of stress, it affects not only your personal life but also your productivity and motivation at work and can lead to anxiety, depression and even difficulty sleeping.  Work stress can be caused by a number of factors such as:

  • Working long hours
  • Being unhappy in your job/role or with your current wage
  • Having too much responsibility or having a heavy workload
  • Having poor management with unclear expectations of your work and/or role within the business
  • Being concerned with working in and unsafe environment or condition
  • Dealing with conflicts with other staff or your boss
  • Being worried about your chances for promotion, advancement or risk of termination
  • Dealing with discrimination or harassment at work

2. Life Stresses

Life stresses are events or experiences throughout your personal life that causes strain on your physical and mental well-being. This can affect multiple aspects of your life and is often described as daunting and inescapable in some circumstances. Some common examples of life stresses include:

  • Getting fired, changing jobs or being unable to find work
  • Having a chronic illness or injury that is affecting your normal routine
  • Drug or alcohol abuse of a family member, friend or yourself
  • Going through a divorce
  • Preparing for marriage
  • Having to move house
  • Having persistent relationship problems with your partner, a family member or a friend
  • Being a victim of abuse, crime or traumatic event
  • Having severe financial problems or debt

3. Mental Stress

Mental stress is stress related to emotions and will frequently come from our own mindset, thoughts and actions. It can be linked with anxiety, depression and many other mental illnesses and some of the common

  • Feeling lonely due to lack of community involvement and/or friendships
  • Having emotional problems like depression or anxiety
  • Having a distorted view on the world, your life or having unrealistic expectations which then leads to persistent disappointment

Stress can be daunting but once you have pin-pointed what is causing you to feel stressed you can then work to find ways to deal with it.
